Bihar government reduces sales taxes on petrol and diesel

Patna, Jun 05 (UNI) The Bihar government today reduced the sales taxes on petrol and diesel to provide succour to the people following price hike of petroleum products.

Principal secretary of the state commercial taxes department S Majumdar said here that notification to this effect was issued late last night.

'' The state government has reduced the sales taxes on petrol from 27 to 24.5 per cent while on diesel it has been reduced from 20 to 18.36 per cent,'' Mr Majumdar said adding that the decision, however, would cause heavy losses to the state exchequer, but it had been taken to provide some sort of insulation to the people from price rise on petroleum products.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had said yesterday that the state government would take steps for rationalisation of sales taxes on petroleum products to give relief to the people of the state following the price hike of Rs 5 per litre on petrol and Rs 3 per litre on diesel announced by the Centre.
