Major fire in Mehta building in Burra Bazar
Kolkata, Jun 3 (UNI) A major fire erupted in a medicine godown at Mehta building in business hub Burra Bazar here this morning.
Official sources said eight fire tenders, which had been pressed into service, were fighting the blaze for the past two hours.
State Fire Brigade Minister Pratim Chatterjee said the blaze, which was still raging, would take some more time to be extinguished.
The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, sources added.
Fire Brigade personnel were apprehending that the fire might spread to surrounding areas, where there were several chemical godowns.
It might be mentioned that the city's commercial hub hogged the news a few months back when Nandaram market was completely razed to ground in a devastating fire.
The city's tryst with fire continued as the famous Jagannath flower market at Mullickghat Ghat near Howrah was also reduced to ashes in a major blaze two months ago.
