DTF opposed to change of admission policy in St Stephen's

New Delhi, Jun 2 (UNI) The Democratic Teachers' Front today expressed concern over the reported change in admission policy of St Stephen's College, terming the move ''uncalled for''.

''It would have been most appropriate to have the admission policy widely publicised which was adopted last year after detailed consultations involving teaching staff,'' DTF president Shaswati Mazumdar said.

''The discussions were held so that the provision of reservation for the SC/ST and for Christians with Dalit background which were introduced last year translated into intake of such students,'' she added.

She said it would be unfortunate if the proposed changes reduced in any way the earmarked 15 per cent seats for the SC/ST candidates and 10 per cent seats for Dalit Christians.

''Such a move would reverse the progressive initiatives taken during last year,'' she added.

''Only those opposed to reservations for the deprived, and those seeking to reserve this institution of academic excellence for the children of political, social and economic elite through a non-transparent admission process are opposed to last year's policy,'' she said.
