Police file criminal cases against 37 jail inmates in Orissa
Puri, May 31 (UNI) Kumbharpara police today registered criminal cases against 37 inmates, including seven dreaded criminals, detained under the National Security Act in Puri district jail in Orissa in connection with arson and violence in the jail premises yesterday.
An assistant jailor and two prisoners were critically injured after some hardened criminals set them on fire. Later, the jail inmates also went on a rampage.
Puri district jail superintendent Janmejay Choudhury had filed a written complaint with the police regarding large scale violence and arson triggered by the inmates and attack on the jail staff.
The inmates were peeved over surprise raid in the jail on last Thursday night by the superintendent in which a number of mobile phones, 12 table-fans, pillows, cigarettes, contraband and cash were recovered.
IG (Prisons) V Thiagarajan, it was learnt, had asked the jail staffs to maintain strict vigil on the criminals and to enforce the jail rules in letter and spirit.
Superintendent of police Asit Kumar Panigrahi said the jail authorities had not informed the police about recovery of objectionable items from the jail during the raid.
