Governor announces Rs 50,000 compensation to kin of victims

Bangalore, May 30 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur tonight announced Rs 50,000 compensation to the next kin of the 40 dead in yesterday's lorry mishap in Hassan District.

Condoling the deaths, the Governor in a statement here, expressed deep distress over the incident near Arkalgud in which 40 people were killed and about 50 people injured when the lorry fell into a 50-feet ditch.

The Governor also announced compensation of RS 25,000 to those injured. ''Immediate relief measures to provide medical care to the injured people has been ensured,'' he added.

The vehicle carrying more than 100 people of a marriage party was crossing a tank bund. In a bid to avoid coming into contact with a low lying high tension electric wire ahead, the driver reversed the vehicle in the narrow road. But it skidded and rolled over three times and fell into the ditch.
