43pc women participated in Thane bypoll: Election Dept

Thane, May 24: According to Election Department figure, merely 43 per cent of women voters participated in Thane bypoll on May 23.

The highest number of women voters among six assembly segments of Lok Sabha was recorded at Murbad, a tribal region. Thane, Ulhasnagar and Kalyan received 40 per cent of them, while Belapur had 41 per cent and Ambernath accounted 42 per cent.

According to the figures, out of 1,33,060 voters, 53,295 were women in Thane. In Belapur, 1,28,497 women voters were counted from the total of 3,15,866 and Ulhasnagar recorded 28,413 women out of 71,890 voters. In Ambernath they were 63,016 out of 1,51,455 total voters and Kalyan had 48,864 of them among 1,22,679 voters. In Murbad, 40,585 women polled from the total of 95,083 voters.

The election candidates felt disappointed and were puzzle over the reduced number of women voters.

The results are scheduled to be declared by tomorrow noon.
