TN Govt sanctions to desilt tanks, channels

Perambalur, May 22: The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned to desilt tanks and channels belonging to the Public Works Department in Chinaaru sub-basin in the district at a cost of Rs 7.68 crore under the Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management (IAMWARM) scheme, District Collector Anil Meshram said.

In a press release here he said a sum of Rs 5.36 crore had been earmarked for desilting the tanks and channels under the scheme.

There were 34 tanks belonging to the PWD in Chinnaru basin, through which over 3,000 acres of agricultural lands were being irrigated.

As part of the scheme, model agricultural farms would be established on 50 acres in selected places where the scheme was to be executed.

Training would be provided to the farmers on modern cultivation practices and about drought-resistant crops through the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Animal Husbandry Department would guide them on how to increase milk and meat production. The officials of the Fisheries Department would lend their expertise on fish rearing in inland tanks and ponds, he added.
