New fishing harbour to be developed in Kanniyakumari dist.

Chennai, May 22 (UNI) In a first of its kind initiative in the PPP mode, infrastructure major Marg Limited will develop a fishing harbour at Rajakkamangalam Thurai in Kanniyakumari district with an investment of Rs 45 crore.

The Detailed Project Report is being finalised by L and T Ramboll and this lagoon type harbour will become operational in October 2010, Marg Managing Director G R K Reddy told reporters here today.

The foundation stone for the harbour, which will benefit about 85,000 people in and around the district, will be laid by Chennai City Police Commissioner G Nanchil Kumaran on May 25 at Rjakkamangalam Thurai.

The fishing harbour will have state of the art facilities of international standards and also generae direct employment to 8,000 people.

It will have a landing wharf with a mooring facility for 300 boats, besides water front facilities for safe landing, berthing to various category of fishing craft, boat building and repair yards, ice plant, cold storage facilities for processing and preservation of the fish catch.

He said this will be the first PPP model fishing harbour in India with 100 per cent investment by Marg About 51 per cent of the revenue goes back to the people.

He said Union Environment Ministry clearance will be soon obtained for the project, which will come up 16 km west of Vivekananda Memorial.
