R Sekar, new Chennai Police Commissioner

Chennai, May 20 (UNI) Chennai Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) R Sekar was today posted as the new City Police Commissioner.

Mr Sekar succeeds Mr G Nanchil Kumaran, who is due to retire by the month-end on attaining superannuation, official sources here said.

In a significant development, the Tamil Nadu Government removed Additional Director General of Police S K Upadhyaya from the post of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) chief and appointed Director General of Police (Training) K Natarajan in his place.

Mr Upadhyaya, who was involved in the telephone tapping controversy, had been kept on Vacancy Reserved (VR) waiting.

His removal comes a day after the Justice P Shanmugam Committee, which probed the telephone tapping issue, submitted its interim report to the Government.

The DVAC chief was allegedly involved in the phone tapping issue with Chief Secretary L K Tripathy and former Social Welfare Minister Dr Poongothai, who had subsequently tendered her resignation.

The state government also appointed Additional Chennai City Police Commissioner S R Jangid as the Commissioner of the Second Police Commissionerate, announced by the State Government recently.
