Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road spruced up for Indo-Pak trade

Srinagar, May 19 : The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is sprucing up the border stretch of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road on the Indian side in anticipation of commodities trade beginning between the divided parts of Kashmir along the Line of Control (LoC).

"The repair work on the road on the Indian side would be soon completed for vehicles to travel right upto the LoC," said Brigadier Ashok Bhutani, Chief Engineer, Project Beacon of BRO.

"Work is on in full swing on the road leading to Uri command post and LoC. About five to six kilometers of the road construction has been completed as the BT work, black topping has been done. We expect that the work will be complete within two months," added Bhutani.

India and Pakistan had decided to introduce truck service in 2005, on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, nearly five months after launching the historic Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service on the same route.

The two countries have almost reached an agreement on the commodities to be traded between the two sides through this route.
