Election to cantonment board in Srinagar after 23 years
Srinagar, May 18 (UNI) Election to seven-member cantonment board in Srinagar was today held after 23 years amid tight security.
A large number of voters residing in areas coming under cantonment board, including Sonawar, Palapora, Indira Nagar, Shivpora, Batwara, Pandraithan and Athwajan participated in the election with women outnumbering men at some polling booths.
Long queues could be seen outside the polling booths set up in schools before the voting began. A large number of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police personnel were deployed around the polling booths.
Four hundred out of 1330 voters had cast their ballot till 1300 hrs, officials said.
They said the last election to the board was held in 1985 after which no polls could be held due to militancy and other reasons, they said.
