2 killed, 1 injured in poll-related violence in Murshidabad
Kolkata, May 18 (UNI) At least two persons were killed and another seriously injured in clashes between CPI(M) and Congress supporters in Murshidabad district as polling began for the third phase of the Panchayat elections in seven West Bengal districts today.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said one person each was killed in Salanpur and Harudanga areas under Domkol police station of the district as rival party supporters clashed within the first few hours of polling.
He said one person was seriously injured at Salanpur and his condition was stated to be critical.
Amidst unprecedented security following violence in the second phase, the third and final phase of the Panchayat elections is being held in seven West Bengal districts of Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, North and South Dinajpur, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Malda.
The first phase of polls, held on May 11, were by and large peaceful. But six people were killed and at least 15 injured in poll related violence during the second phase of polling on May 14.
