City police Commissionerate to be bifurcated, one for suburbs
Chennai, May 12 (UNI) The 150-year-old Chennai City Police Commissionerate will be bifurcated into two Commissionerates, with one exclusively to cater to the city suburbs.
Announcing this while replying to the debate on the demand for grants for police department in the state Assembly, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said the Commissionerate was being bifurcated for administrative reasons on the lines of Mumbai and Hyderabad commissionerates.
He said after the bifurcation, a separate police Commissionerate would be set up for the city suburbs.
The decision was taken, taking into consideration the fact that the population in the Chennai Commissionerate had already exceeded Rs 1.2 crore.
The suburbs were also fast developing, he said, adding, besides more number of houses and vehicular traffic, a lot of industries have also come up necessitating a separate Commissionerate.
The Mumbai Commissionerate has been bifurcated and two separate Commissionerates were set up for the suburbs. Similarly, the Hyderabad Commissionerate was also bifurcated with one each for city and suburbs.
