New India Assurance, BSNL ordered to pay to consumers in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 10 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) has directed the New India Assurance Company Limited to pay Rs 5,31,320 to a consumer and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited to pay Rs 14,000 for faulty telephone service in Kashmir.

The SCDRC has directed New India Assurance to pay the amount to Haji Ghulam Rasool Sofi, a resident of Handwara, whose insured stocks were gutted in a fire mishap in March, 1997.

Earlier, the company had refused to pay against the damage.

Later, Sofi approached the CSDRC, who also directed the Company for making the payment within two months, failing which the complainant would be entitled to interest at the rate of 8 per cent per annum from the date of loss.

In another case, the Commission has ordered the BSNL, Srinagar, General Manager to pay Rs 10,000 to G M D Baba, besides Rs 4,000 as appeal cost for disrupting telephone connectivity between June 23 to December 18, 2005.
