By Pinaki Das

Agartala, May 8 : Residents in Tripura capital Agartala are celebrating the 147th birth anniversary of poet Rabindranath Tagore.

On Thursday, the main programme was organised at the Rabindakana Park and at the Rabindra Centenary Hall Ground here.

Young and famous artists from schools, colleges, clubs, NGOs and other social organisations took part in the programme. Artists from Kolkata were also present on the occasion.

Different songs, dances and dramas composed by the Nobel Laureate were performed at the cultural programme to commemorate his birth anniversary.

Tagore is regarded as the greatest writer in modern Indian literature. He was a poet, novelist, educator, and an early advocate of Independence for India. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 for his magnum opus Geetanjali.

"Rabindranath Tagore is a part of our everyday life. His creations, dramas and poetry are inevitable part of our lives. We remember him everyday, every moment. But today is special because it the birthday of the greatest poet," said Chanda Ray, a fan.

Shyamal Choudhury, another fan, said: "Rabindranath and Tripura have very old relations. In fact, Rabindranath wrote the famous drama Rajeshri in the Tripura context. Today, to keep our youths away from the ill influence of appalling culture, we need them to know Rabindranath, and in fact, it is important that they know about his birth anniversary."
