Hospital uses novel procedure to remove appendix

Coimbatore, May 8 (UNI) Gem Hospital successfully removed appendix through the vagina on a 46-year-old woman without any scar on the body using Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES).

The hospital beamed the novel procedure live to V International Workshop on Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy held in Seoul, South Korea, where over 1000 leading surgeons and gastroenterologists witnessed the procedure.

Dr C Palanivelu of the Gem Hospital told UNI that Sumathi(name changed) came to the hospital with abdominal pain.

She was diagnosed will acute appendicitis. Since the hospital had experience in removing gall bladder through vagina using the endoscope, the doctors decide to use NOTES.A team of surgeons completed the procedure successfully within 45 minutes.
