Worlds Bank to provide Rs 1365.40 crore for roads in HP

Shimla, May 7 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Public Works and Revenue Minister Gulab Singh Thakur today announced that a project of worth Rs 1365.40 crore to maintain and improve the condition of roads for five years had been started with the help of World Bank.

Addressing a review meeting of Public Works Department the minister said under this project 435 km long roads would be upgraded in the state and 2000 km length of roads would be maintained and improved under the project.

The Minister said providing road connectivity to every village was top priority of the present Government and asked the officers to work with complete dedication.

''The Government is according priority to uphold quality in construction projects and negligence of any kind would be viewed seriously. The Government would honour officers and officials who performed well while necessary action would be taken against those who were negligent towards their duties," Mr Thakur added.

He said NABARD had sanctioned 118 road projects worth Rs 180 crore for the state, which would be completed soon and the process of land acquisition should be speeded up in order to expand road network in the state. He directed the engineers to ensure quality in road construction projects.

The Public Works Minister said Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna was started in the year 2000 by the then Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee to strengthen road network and added that projects worth Rs 2146 crore had been sanctioned under the scheme.

''The panchayats of the State have been provided road connectivity under the project and target of the State Government is to connect all villages having population of 500 with roads by the year 2009'', he added.
