NCW chairperson welcomes introduction of Women's Bill

New Delhi, May 6 (UNI) Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Girija Vyas today welcomed the introduction of Women's Bill in the Rajya Sabha proposing 33 per cent reservation for women.

In a statement here, Dr Vyas said,''We are trying for it and we want the Bill to be passed. I am happy that it is cleared and introduced in the Rajya Sabha. Now the Bill, which has been gathering dust for 12 years, will not lapse.'' Dr Vyas hoped that if women could sit in Parliament and the state Assemblies, gender inequality would be solved to a certain extent.

''Women have waited for a long time for political space and now the time has come for the political parties to give them their rightful place in Parliament and state Legislatures,''Dr Vyas said and thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and NGOs and women groups for the coordination.
