Kannur University to honour Wing Commander Murkot Ramunny
Kannur, May 6 (UNI) Kerala University will confer Wing Commander Murkot Ramunny with 'Doctor of Letters' for his contribution in various fields.
Informing this at a press conference here today, Varsity Vice-Chancellor P Chandra Mohan said Governor and Chancellor of the University R L Bhatia would confer the honorary D Lit on Ramunny on May 8 at Mangattuparamba campus.
The first pilot in the India Air Force (IAF) from Kerala, Ramunny had seen action during the second world war in Burma against the Japanese. After independence, he was deputed to the Secretariat of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as Staff Officer in Defence Committee of the Cabinet.
He was one of the ten officers selected for the Indian Frontier Administrative service, which later merged with IAS.
For about a quarter of a century, he served in Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Lakshadweep, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Awarded ''Tri Sakthi Patta'' by the King of Nepal, Ramunny was also involved in the formation of three universities - The Tribhuvan University in Nepal, The North Eastern Hill Univeristy, Shillong and the Kannur University -- in Kerala.
Painter M F Hussain, sprint queen P T Usha and Kudiyattam maestro Ammanur Madhava Chakiar, were earlier honoured with D Lit by the university.
