Dasmunsi demands postponement of panchayat poll in Nandigram

Kolkata, May 6 (UNI) The Congress today demanded postponement of panchayat elections in Nandigram followint violence in the area.

''In Nandigram there is bloodshed. The panchayat elections in the area should be postponed,'' Pradesh Congress president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.

Mr.Dasmunsi, who is also Information and Broadcasting Minister, said he had apprised Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil of the Nandigram situation.

Alleging that a farce was being enacted in the name of elections in Nandigram, he said the Government would be responsible if the law and order situation worsened further.

Mr.Dasmunsi said he had also urged the state election commissioner to postpone the rural polls at Nandigram considering the present situation.

He also reiterated that the state government should convene an all-party meeting after May 18, when panchayat poll in the rest of the state would be over, to review the Nandigram situation and take a decision on conducting polls there.
