Wheat procurement touches 13.5 million tonne mark till today
New Delhi, Apr 29 (UNI) The Centre has informed that wheat procurement by government agencies has touched 13.49 million tonne (MT) till today as against the procurement of 7.77 MT only on the same day last year when the total procurement was 11.12 MT.
Government agencies have procured 7.26 MT of wheat in Punjab and 4.27 MT in Haryana. Other States where substantial procurement has taken place include Madhya Pradesh (0.79 MT), Uttar Pradesh (0.59 MT) and Rajasthan (0.45 MT).
India was forced to import wheat in 2006 and 2007 as domestic purchases were not upto mark and fell below targets.
The nodal agency Food Corporation of India(FCI) had bought 9 MT of wheat in 2006 and 11.1 million tonnes in 2007, which was much below of its target of 15 million tonnes.
