Acute shortage of water in state

Imphal, April 28: The entire state of Manipur is facing shortage of water following the failure of the Singda Multipurpose Project, the main source of water in the city areas.

The people of the Imphal city, dependent on water supply undertaken by the state Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED), were now relying on the water supplied by some private tankers.

Meanwhile, the operators of the private tankers said they could supply water at the most to only five to ten houses in a day, whereas, the demand was much higher.

Moreover, owing to no rainfall since the past few days, most of the ponds were drying up and the people were compelled to use water from the highly polluted Nambul and Imphal rivers as there was no other source.

Meanwhile, official sources said the Singda project was under repair and unable to supply water.

The Khuga Multipurpose Project, Thoubal Multipurpose Project and Dolaithabi Barrage were some of the projects presently under construction by the state government to provide water to the people, the sources added.
