Chandigarh, April 25 : Though most of the cities in India today appear to be giving importance to concrete buildings at the cost of their green cover, Chandigarh city is defying this latest trend.

Widely known as a well-planned city, Chandigarh today takes pride in the fact that it has a huge spread of green all around. The pleasant reality has not just added to the overall look, it has also turned it a safe city to live in for all.

The flowering trees, creepers, shrubs, vast green expanses today give the city a captivating look.

The city today offers an unparalleled greenery and a pollution-free environment to live. One can have a look at this pleasant reality in the city's various parks and gardens, roads, avenues and private houses.

One can today notice how the general feeling of My garden, My city' has influenced the entire landscape and ultimately turning out to be the essence of Chandigarh.

People are encouraged to increase green pastures all around. The endeavour has shown quite impressive results, as it has been supported by administration, public and corporate sector as well.

Residents are quite active in ensuring that more and more plantation is done at every possible place in and around their homes.

Rajinder Kaur, a housewife, who has maintained a small but attractive garden in her house, tells that she could make it all happen due his strong passion for gardening.

She says: "To maintain all this, my husband and myself spend at least two hours every morning. There's one man for the interiors of the house, and another for garden. Together they put in about eight hours tending to the plants. The guards too help in watering. Certainly, maintaining such a big garden in summers is not that easy." he city with its profusely green and ordered matrix appears to have gained a distinct identity for itself.

So much so, today visualizing Chandigarh looks incomplete without its tree plantation drill to define type of plantations in open spaces, along different types of roads in relation to the buildings.

According to the Mayor of Chandigarh, the attempt is to seek public cooperation to maintain the greenery.

"We are seeking people's cooperation to maintain the city's greenery and looking forward for support from welfare associations, local governing bodies and NGOs. Moreover, people in Chandigarh preserve nature and maintain health, as they organize yoga camps and aware others on nature. Chandigarh has a concept of staying healthy by protecting nature," said Pradeep Chhabra, the Mayor of Chandigarh.

Chandigarh has also gained worldwide reputation for being a verdant haven.

Be it roadsides, colonies or every possible place, care is given to ensure beautification through greenery.

Various roundabouts get their names from their sponsors, corporates who have been contracted for their maintenance.

The administration spends about 180,000 dollars annually on the gardens. It has employed over 600 gardeners for a proper upkeep.By Ashwini Kaushal
