Salary difference of Rs 67.66 between urban and rural women

New Delhi, Apr 23 (UNI) The difference in wages and salaries of urban and rural women employees is as much as Rs 67.66 a day.

Stating this, Labour and Employment Minister Oscar Fernandes said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha that the average wages of a rural woman employee was Rs 85.53 while her urban counterpart drew Rs 153.19 a day.

"In the rural areas, women were predominantly working in farm related services which were not highly paid, whereas in urban areas women were working in different sectors including services and other organised sectors where the wages were higher," he explained, quoting from a National Sample Survey Organisation report.

He said the disparity in wages could be attriuted to difference in nature of activities carried out by women in these areas.
