Transport allowance: DU and CAG differ strongly
New Delhi, Apr 21 (UNI) Sounds incredible that the Delhi University paid an amount of Rs 88.93 lakh as transport allowance to its employees residing within the campus.
This was revealed by Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
Ms Purandeswari said the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had objected to payment of transport allowance to those employees of the Delhi University who had been provided accommodation in the North Campus of the university.
Consequently, the University Grants Commission was advised by the government to deduct this amount from the maintenance grant of the University and ''the UGC has reported that an amount of Rs 88.93 lakh has been deducted from the budget estimates (2007-08) of the Delhi University,'' she informed the House.
The minister also said that the Delhi University was, however, of the view that transport allowance was admissible in terms of the Finance Ministry's official memo (OM) of October 3, 1997.
As ''the North Campus is not a compact campus, the matter has been referred to the Finance Ministry for clarification,'' she added.
