A proposal to put a ban on such polls was forwarded to the Government by the Election Commission, Minister of Law Justice H R Bhardwaj told the House in a written reply.
The Commission had recommended to the Government that there was the need for a specific provision in the Representation of the People Act, 1951 prohibiting the publishing and disseminating of results of any opinion poll starting from the date of notification of election and till the completion of poll in the last phase of election, said the Minister.
