Jammu, Apr 21 (UNI) Normal life was thrown out of gear in this winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir as transporters today observed complete ''chakkajam'' in support of their main demand of hike in fares and freight charges.

All passenger vehicles remained off the roads in support of ''token strike'' call given by the Jammu Province Passenger Vehicle Transport Association with a notice of one week for addressing the demands.

The strike particularly affected low-grade working people, schools children and vendors as majority preferred to stay indoor.

People were seen walking through the city lanes in Jammu.

Personal light motor vehicles, two-wheelers and some auto-rickshaws were however running on the city roads.

''No incident of violence was reported from anywhere in the city as the strike went off peacefully'', police control room told UNI.

Private transport operators had announced a token ''chakka jam'' here in a bid to put pressure on the state government to concede their demands, which included revision of passenger fares and freight charges in view of steep hike in the fuel, and lubricant prices.

The transporters had warned the state government that if their demands are not addressed they will launch an indefinite strike.
