Mamata obstructed from visiting family of gangrape victim

Nandigram, (Gokulnagar) Apr 20 (UNI) All India Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was today obstructed from visiting the house of Radharani Ari, who was allegedly gangraped by CPI(M) activists on Friday night.

Ms Banerjee was moving towards Garupara village in Nandigram to console with the family of Radharani Ari, when some women supporters of CPI(M) surrounded her convoy and pelted stones at her vehicle and dragged the driver out and beat him up.

East Midnapur SP S S Panda said about 20 women CPI(M) activists from Khejuri prevented MsBanerjee from entring Garupara.

Ms Banerjee said, ''They wanted to kill me. I am cancelling my visit today as Additional SP Prasun Banerjee, Additional SP of Tamluk Prasun Banerjee and Nandigram Police OC Debasis Chakraborty told me that they cannot provide sufficient security at the moment.

But, I will return on April 23 and meet her family members.'' Reportedly, the victim, a BUPC member, is a close associate of Ms Banerjee.

Ms Banerjee was being accompanied by BUPC Convener Sisir Adhikary.

Meanwhile, Subhendu Adhikary, MLA, and other AITC leaders managed to meet Radharani's family members at her house.

Tension prevailed in Nandigram, especially at Garupara and Gokulnagar. Mr Panda, however, said the situation was under control.
