WB: Congress defeats CPI(M) in Kharba by-poll

Malda, Apr 16: Asif Mahboob of Congress today defeated CPI(M)'s Anjuara Begam by 10,393 votes in the Kharba assembly by-election held on April 12.

Asif Mahboob polled 67,067 votes against Anjuara Begam's 56,674.

BJP's Sital Chakraborty came a distant third securing 6985, while All India Trinamool Congress's Abdul Khalek bagged 4547 votes.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of Congress MLA Mahbul Haq. Asif Mahboob is his son.
