Srinagar, Apr 14: A top commander of Pakistan based Lashker-e- Toiba (LeT) was killed in a fierce encounter on the outskirts of the city today, a senior police officer said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Srinagar, S A Mujtaba said that Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, assisted by Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint operation at Theed on the city outskirts following a tip off about the presence of top LeT militants there.
He said the entire area, including nearby hill, was sealed off from all sides to foil any attempt by militants to escape. After a long wait, security forces observed some moment at 0100 hrs. When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened fire.
Security forces also retaliated and in the fierce clash a militant was killed.
Later the slain militant was identified as Abu Nasai alias Zakira, a self-styled District Commander of LeT. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.
