50 people arrested for obstructing Maitree Exp
Krishnagar, Apr 14 (UNI) About 50 people were arrested for obstructing the historic journey of 'Maitree Express', which left for Bangladesh today, at Bankim Nagar station on Gede railway line here.
The eight-bogey train entered Gede in Nadia district at 0925hrs, where it was obstructed by Nikhil Banga Nagaika Sangha (NBNS), an organisation of the Bangladeshi refugees, for about eight minutes.
The blockade was lifted after police intervention. The train, however, left Gede at 1125 hrs.
NBNS president Subhas Chakraborty said,''We will continue the agitation till the train service is stopped.'' The organistion has been demanding proper rehabilitation and resettlement packages from both the Indian and Bangladeshi governments.
Another 'Maitree Express' from Dhaka will leave for Kolkata at 1620 hrs with 350 passengers.
