Hyderabad, Apr 7: Ugadi, the Telugu New Year Day, is being celebrated with religious fervour and pomp across Andhra Pradesh, today. Dressed in new clothes, people offered puja in temples and started the day by tasting the traditional 'Ugadi Pachadi' (dish made of six ingredients), symbolising the various hues of life.

Panchanga Sravanam, where scholars chanted vedic mantras and made predictions for the year from the almanac, was the main event in most functions organised by various cultural and spiritual organisations and temples.

At the main function held at Ravindra Bharathi auditorium here, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy said his Government would go ahead with its policies to uplift the weaker sections of the society and was committed to the development of the State.

The festival was also celebrated at Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and State BJP offices, amidst chanting of Vedic hymns and almanac reading.

A Tirupati report said Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) would jointly organise 'Ugadi Utsavalu' at TUDA ground this evening. The celebration would feature 'Annamacharya Sankeerthans' and 'Sarvadharnama Panchanga Sravanam' (reading of the almanac) by noted Sanskrit scholar Dr M Srinivasa Rao. Noted Tollywood comedian Brahmanandham would be felicitated by the organisers.

Later, Unjal Seva would be performed to Lord Venkateswara and his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi on the dais.
