Indian NGOs to vie for award worth Rs 40 lakh

Mumbai, Apr 3 (UNI) The oldest and largest environmental organisation in the US --Sierra Club, today announced the first ''Green Energy and Green Livelihoods Achievement Award'' to recognise outstanding environmental success in India.

''The first winner of the Award is likely to be announced by 2009 in Mumbai and will be presented the prize worth Rs 40 lakh (USD 1,00,000),'' said Sierra Club Exective Director Carl Pope in a release.

The Award will be open to civil society organisations, NGOs, cooperatives, small businesses and labour unions working at the grassroots level in India.

In addition to the Award, the Sierra Club would also establish a Center for Green Livelihoods in India and explore alternative ways of developing a green economy, the release added.
