Gangster-turned-politican Arun Gawli's cousin arrested

Mumbai, Mar 27 (UNI) Vijay Ahir, cousin of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli and his three associates were arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch for allegedly demanding extortion money of Rs 50 lakh from a builder in the north-central part of the city.

Vijay (45) and his two associates, Dinesh Narkar (23) and Sudhir Ghorpade (28), were arrested yesterday from their residence at Mazgaon, while another associate Ajit Chandrakant Rane (32) was arrested today from Sakinaka, police said.

Police have seized cash worth Rs 18,000 and gold ornaments worth Rs 4.5 lakh, comprising of five gold chains, one bracelet, five gold rings and other things from their possession. All the accused were remanded to police custody till April 2.

On March 25, a builder from Dadar area had lodged a complaint with the crime branch against Vijay Ahir and his accomplices for threatening him and taking him to Dagdi Chawl in Byculla, demanding a sum of Rs 50 lakh as the extortion money.

The accused had already allegedly extorted Rs eight lakh from the builder between October 2005 and June 2007. They had again started threatening him and demanding extortion money, the builder stated in his complaint.

When the builder did not comply with their threats, accused Narkar and Ghorpade had allegedly taken the builder to Dagdi Chawl at gun-point to meet Ahir, police added.
