Four Left nominees and an Independent elected to RS

Kolkata, Mar 26(UNI) All the four Left nominees and an Independent candidate, supported by both the Left and Congress, were declared elected to the Rajya Sabha in the biennal poll held in the West Bengal Assembly today.

Those elected were Mr Shyamal Chakraborty, Mr Prasanta Chatterjee and Mr Tarini Roy(all CPI-M), Mr Debabrata Biswas (Forward Bloc) and Mr Ahmad Saeed Malihabadi(Independent), who defeated sitting Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Trivedi by 17 votes in a straight fight.

Among the Left candidates, Mr Chakraborty, the CITU state secretary, was a newcomer while three others got elected to the House of elders for the second time.

With the defeat of Mr Trivedi, a second time aspirant, the Trinamool Congress is left with only two members in the Rajya Sabha.
