Kolkata, Mar 25 (UNI) Even though violence dogged Nandigram over land acquisition for a chemical hub, a standing committee of the West Bengal Assembly today said a cross-section of people of the area was in favour of setting up of industries.

Commerce and Industries Standing Committee Chairman Sudip Bandopadhyay said he and his colleagues spoke to a wide cross-section of people at Nandigram.

" They want industry to be set up sine they want employment, " he said while talking to reporters.

Mr Bandopadhyay, a senior Congress member, said Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should withdraw his decision against setting up any industry at Nandigram.

While assuring the local people that they would not be uprooted, Mr Bhattacharjee had declared at a public meeting at Nandigram early this month that the Government would not go for any land acquisition in the area for industries.

He also said the proposed chemical hub that ignited the year-long trouble, would be set up at Nayachar near the adjoining industrial town of Haldia.

A situation would have to be created so that the area of confrontation was not extended.

The Committee proposed that a shipbuilding yard be set up at Badur (Geonkhali) in East Midnapore district instead of Jellingham within Nandigram-I block.
