Lok Adalats getting popular in Kashmir, 450 cases resolved

Srinagar, Mar 23: As the Lok Adalats concept received an encouraging response, two such adalats were held in the valley which has decided more than 450 cases and awarded about Rs 25 lakh compensation.

An official spokesman said a Lok Adalat was held in the Sadder Court here yesterday where eight benches were constituted under the supervision and control of Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar Principal District and Sessions Judge.

He said, in all 1331 cases were taken up by the benches, out of which 427 cases were amicably settled among the parties on the spot. A fine of Rs 1,56,750 was realised in various Criminal Compoundable cases. He said a compensation of Rs 25 lakh Motor Accident Claim Tribunal was awarded in various MACT cases. Further a sizeable number of pre-litigative bank recovery cases were also settled on the spot in which a relief of Rs nine lakh was given to the people who taken loans.

A similar adalat, chaired by Sub-Judge Gowhar Ahmad Dalal, was held at Munsif court Doru in Anantang district. Out of 39 criminal civil and other cases, 24 cases were amicably settled. A fine of Rs 1000 was also received in the said Lok Adalat.Meanwhile, another adalat was held on the court premises of Munsif where nine cases were taken up for hearing.However, only four cases were settled amicably among the parties.

Thousands of cases, pending for several decades, were so far settled by Lok Adalats in the Jammu and Kashmir during the past three months.
