Canada keen to import fruits from Meghalaya

Shillong, Mar 22 (UNI) Canada is keen on importing fruits and their value added products from Meghalaya, Canada's High Commissioner to India David M Malone said here today.

'' We are willing to assist Meghalaya in setting up of cold storage chain facilities to export the fruits outside the country, '' Mr Malone told newsmen.

The Canadian envoy, who had already shown keen interest on investing in health and oil sectors in Assam, said Meghalaya is known for pineapples and Canada is keen to import fruits and value added products from Meghalaya.

Mr Malone, accompanied by Political Adviser Andrian Norfolk, yesterday called on Governor S S Sidhu and Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee, discussed various issues relating to possibility of Canadian investment in Meghalaya.

'' I have heard from the Governor and Chief Secretary and when I am back in Delhi. I would explore possibilities to invite Canadian companies to invest in this peaceful state, '' the envoy said.

Asked about Canadian companies investing in Tourism, Mr Malone said the government should first provide infrastructure to attract tourists in the state.

'' All basic infrastructures are required for tourists or for that matter an investor too. If infrastructure requirements are met, I am sure investors would flow, '' he stated.
