Several injured in lathicharge
Hubli, Mar 21 (UNI) Several people, including mediapersons received minor injuries when police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse two groups of people who pelted stones at each other in the Savanur town of Haveri district about 80 km from here today.
The trouble started after the town municipality banned holding shanty at Agaar maidan in the town. One of the traders group attempted to set up tents on the day of weekly shanty today while another group opposed it. This led to a wordy duel between them and turned violent with both the groups throwing stones at each other.
When the situation went out of control police resorted to lathicharge.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr PC had been promulgated in the town as a precautionary measure, though the situation was later brought under control, police said.
The injured were admitted to the government hospital here.
Senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner P S Vastrad rushed to the spot and pacified both the groups.
