Panguni Uthiram fest celebrated

Tiruchirapalli, Mar 21 (UNI) The annual 'Panguni Uthiram' festival was celebrated with religious fervour in Sri Subramaniyaswamy temple at Kumaravayalur, near here and in all the Murugan temples in this district today.

Despite heavy rain and chilly weather, a large number of devotees converged on the banks of river Cauvery.

Carrying holy river water, milk and other pooja items, the devotees walked the distance to Sri Subramaniyaswamy temple at Kumaravayalur and performed special 'Abishekams' and Poojas to Lord Muruga, to mark the occasion.

To fulfill their prayers some of the devotees pierced sharp objects on their cheeks and pulled small carts with big iron hooks (Alagu Kuthuthal) attached to their body and went to various Murugan temples in different parts of the city.

The festival was also celebrated at Shri Pughazhimalai, Shri Vennaimalai Murugan temples in Karur district, Sri Subramaniyaswamy temple at Chettikulam in Perambalur district, Virazhimali in Pudukkottai district and at Kundrakudi in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu.
