Social Forestry Department urges people to 'khelo Holi, eco friendly
Thane, Mar 16 (UNI) The Social Forestry Department has urged people to play Holi, the festival of colours, in an environment-friendly manner.
''Khelo Holi, Eco friendly'' is the slogan coined by the department in this regard, Social Forestry deputy director Kishore Thackeray told reporters here today.
Mr Thackeray said the department was endeavouring to spread awareness among the children to play Holi in an eco-friendly manner.
Mr Thackeray said that the department, with the help of NGOs, was also trying to promote the concept of ''Community Holi'' in order to avoid excessive burning of wood for bonfires.
He pointed out that lighting Holi bonfires by using materials like plastics, tyres and tubes causes severe pollution and should, therefore, be avoided.
The department and the NGOs have jointly established eco-clubs in schools across the state and are spreading awareness about the environment, Mr Thackeray said.
