Police detain Tibetans demanding freedom from China

New Delhi, Mar 15 : Police here have detained Tibetans for demonstrating outside the Chinese Embassy on Friday.

Shouting 'Free Tibet', the protesters also scuffled with police who tried to stop their march.

The Tibetan agitation has been organised to highlight China's illegal occupation of their homeland.

Hundreds of Tibetan refugees set off on a march to Tibet from India on March 10 as part of global protests to mark the 49th anniversary of an uprising against Chinese rule.

Tibetans also took out a candle light protest and demanded that India support their cause.

The Indian Government has said that no Tibetan protest against China will be entertained from its soil.

"This is the only option left because the Indian Government is not allowing to march forward. The India Government is working under pressure from China. We only have the option to protest on the road," said Jermen, a protester.

Earlier, police had arrested hundreds of Tibetans in Dharamshala as they attempted to march towards the Chinese border.

As the Olympics approach, Tibetans are trying to revive their freedom movement and protest against what they see as China's illegal occupation of their homeland.

Meanwhile, authorities in China have warned those involved with rioting in Tibetan capital Lhasa top give themselves up by Monday midnight.

According to a Xinhua news agency report, law and order authorities in Tibet have issued a notice to the rioters, accusing them of burning schools, hospitals, shops and houses, besides killing ten people.

The security crack down announcement on Saturday came even as Chinese Television showed pictures of rioters burning building in Lhasa for the first time ever.

The authorities reportedly are determined to launch a public campaign to expose the misdeeds of the rioters.
