Kerala plans to limit number of domestic jumbos

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 12: Kerala will impose restrictions on bringing elephants from other states as it already has 942 domestic elephants, Forest Minister Binoy Viswom informed the Assembly today.

Replying to the questions, he said the government wanted to ensure that the number of domestic elephants should not go beyond certain limit.

He said it would take stringent measures to end cruelty to domestic elephants. As part of it, as many as 785 mahouts were given special training. There was also a proposal to constitute a welfare fund for them.
