Chennai Airport unaffected by AAI employees stir

Chennai, Mar 12: Flight operations at both the International and Domestic airport terminals here were unaffected today following the Airport Authority of India (AAI) employees non-cooperation agitation against the Centre's decision to close down the existing airports of Bangalore and Hyderabad after the new airports become operational.

Airport officials said all the flights, including international and domestic were operating as per the schedule time. Boarding on flight and security checks for international flights to various destinations were going on smoothly. The State government and IAF have deployed their fire service personnel in view of the fire services personnel of AAI supporting the stir.

Soon after the agitation which began at midnight last night, AAI employees of the fire-fighting, housekeeping, engineering and ground safety departemtns stayed away from duty at Chennai Airport and raised slogans to press their demands.

There was no cancellation or delay of flights till morning. A report from Tiruchirapalli said operation of flight services in the International airport was not affected despite the strike by 92 AAI employees.

Airport sources said 11 IAF personnel and firemen from the state government were deployed at the airport to oversee the smooth operation of flights.

The striking employees staged a dharna in front of the Tiruchirapalli airport protesting the Centre's move to privatise the airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad.
