New Delhi, Mar 11 (UNI) The BJP Parliamentary Party today strongly condemned the claims of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Congress leaders of helping farmers while in reality the farm loan waiver was more of a propoganda than giving relief.
BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra told newspersons after a meeting of BJP MPs that the claim by Dr Singh and other leaders of helping farmers had fallen flat when one considered the date fixed for waiver of loans and the land ceiling fixed for their holdings.
The BJP Parliamentary Party would counter these claims and expose how hollow it was, he said.
There was no rationale in the government's announcements where 70 per cent of the farmers who had availed loans from private lenders had been kept out of the benefits. The BJP MPs want the government to make a distinction between the irrigated and unirrigated land for loan waiver.
The BJP MPs were doubtful about the govenrment's claim that the loan waiver would be to the extent of Rs 60,000 crores and nobody had a clue from where the money would come.
The government had made no provision in the budget for the purpose and the fate of farmers would be in the mercy of future governments as the UPA government was only passing the problems on the next government.
If one strictly go by the dates announced for waiver and the extent of land, the waiver would not exceed Rs 20,000 crore and even for this, the government has given no indication as to how it would waive the loans.
