TN CM writes to PM: increase sea surveillance

Chennai, Mar 8 (UNI) Expressing concern over the frequent attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to increase sea surveillance by Coast Guard and Navy to prevent such incidents.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, copy of which was released to the press here, he urged the Centre to instruct the Coast Guard and Navy to be more vigilant and carry out effective patrolling and surveillance at sea.

Demanding strengthening of the sea surveillance, he recalled the Demi Official letter, written to him on March 30 last year, and sought enhanced presence of the Coast Guard and Navy for intensive sea and air patrolling with additional manpower, state-of the art Vessels and Aircrafts.

Citing the incidents of one killing and abduction of 62 Indian fishermen by the Lankan navy yesterday, he said frequent firing incidents had created a sense of insecurity and unrest among the fishermen in Tamil Nadu.
