One killed, 15 injured in clash in Nashik District

Nashik, Mar 8: A 40-year-old person was killed and 15 others, including a policeman, injured in a clash between two groups over land dispute in Vinchur town in Niphad taluka of the district. Police have identified the deceased as Ramdas Karbhari Darekar, a resident of Vinchur.

According to sources, the clash occurred between the two groups of farmers this evening. In that, 15 people were injured including former Zilla Parishad Chairman Pandharinath Thore, his brother Sudam Thore and Vasant Bhoye, a police officer attached to Lasalgaon police station. Following this, one person from a group allegedly fired at Darekar from his revolver, leading to his death. His death angered the other group, which went on rampage.

Irate mob pelted stones, damaged shops and also burnt some private vehicles. They also staged 'rasta roko' agitation. To control the situation, the police resorted to mild lathi charge.

The clash was the fallout of the eviction drive undertaken by the authorities for road-widening work of Nashik-Aurangabad Highway. For this, earlier in the day, encroachments by a group of farmers was removed by the authorities, while leaving the other untouched. This led to the clash between the two groups, sources said, adding, 16 persons have been arrested in this connection.

With the deployment of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) to assist the Nashik Rural Police, the situation is tense but under control, according to latest reports.
