Shops down shutters protesting killing of fisherman by Lankan Navy

Rameswaram, Mar 6 (UNI) All commercial establishments downed their shutters in Thangatchimadam and Pamban coastal villages in the Rameswaram island today, in protest against the killing of Indian fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy in an unprovoked firing yesterday.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased fisherman A Christe, who was shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy was laid to rest amid tense situation in his native Thangachimadam, this afternoon.

Tight security arrangements were made in sensitive places to prevent any untoward incidents.

The district administration today handed over Rs one lakh solatium sanctioned by Tamil Nadu government to the family of Christe.

The fishermen associations appealed to the government to pay a solatium of Rs five lakh to the family.
