Online criminal info system launched to help police

Madurai, Mar 3: Smart Sys, an online criminal information system has been launched in this district to help police expedite action on various offences, including road accidents.

Inaugurating the Short Messaging Service (SMS)-based system here last evening, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Sanjeev Kumar said mobile phone users could alert the police by sending an SMS to a toll free number 9788111000. He said the identity of the senders would be kept confidential.

The system provided information on all registered vehicles in Tamil Nadu and history of habitual offenders. Mr Kumar warned that action would be initiated against those who send fake informations to the police.
