New Delhi, Mar 2 : The Supreme Court has supported the dismissal of a teacher who had assaulted the headmaster of his institution.

The Supreme Court said that a person who is involved in such act resembles a "goon" and is not suitable for the job of a teacher.

"A teacher has to be a role model in the society. He is a 'guru' who sets an example for the students. A person who physically assaults the principal of the institution is, in our opinion, not fit to be a teacher. He is more like a goonda," a Bench comprising Justices H K Sema and Markanday Katju observed.

Accused Satbir Singh Mahla, a Maths teacher in a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Suratgarh was teaching as a Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT). In February 1999, he assaulted the school principal resulting to serious injuries to the latter.

The school administration ordered an inquiry in the case that found Mahla guilty and he was dismissed from service on May 1, 2000.
